Sustainability
Life takes energy. And at Enbridge, we take seriously our responsibility to deliver it to where it’s needed, safely and reliably, today and well into the future. Sustainability is—and has to be—core to how we do business.
Over decades, we’ve held ourselves to high standards of corporate social responsibility and that continues to be how we define sustainability today: conducting business in a socially responsible and ethical manner; protecting the environment and the safety of people; and engaging, learning from, respecting and supporting the communities and cultures with which we work.
Our commitment to sustainability underpins our long-term vision: to be the leading energy infrastructure company in North America. To us, that means we’re delivering the energy people need and want: we’re putting safety first, we’re protecting our environment and we’re making the transition with society to a lower carbon energy future. We’re the first choice of our customers and we’ve earned the trust of the people, communities and Indigenous Nations and groups touched by our operations and projects. Our team is energized and proud and we demonstrate genuine care for the impact we have in our communities, the environment and with each other. We’re investing and partnering to make life better in our communities.
While we focus on creating long-term value for our shareholders, we recognize we do that best by living up to the responsibility we have to all of our stakeholders—within and outside of our company – to ensure our strategies, decisions and actions take everyone’s interests into account.
Enbridge adheres to a strong set of corporate values, and has adopted and implemented a number of corporate responsibility policies and practices.
Enbridge’s overall commitment and approach to corporate social responsibility is summarized in our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy.
Our Climate Policy guides our efforts to play a leadership role in the transition to a lower carbon future, and identifies the actions we are taking to manage climate risks and respond to climate opportunities.
Our Indigenous Peoples Policy guides the nature and scope of our relationships with Indigenous peoples wherever we interact with them.
At home and abroad, employees must adhere to our Statement on Business Conduct which outlines expected standards of behaviour and ethics, and is a condition of employment at Enbridge. Our Supplier Code of Conduct outlines Enbridge’s expectations on the ethical standards and business conduct of our suppliers in the areas of health and safety, the environment, labor and human rights, and responsible business behavior.
Enbridge is also signatory to the United Nations Global Compact
We know our stakeholders and the general public are seeking greater transparency and accountability from us on our approach to sustainability and how we address the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues most relevant to our business. Through our sustainability reporting we strive to respond to our stakeholders’ information needs and to hold ourselves accountable for our performance and commitment to continually getting better at what we do.
Our annual Sustainability reports provide an overview of our management approach and performance, focusing on three priority areas of greatest interest to our stakeholders: safety and environmental protection; stakeholder and Indigenous inclusion; and, climate and energy solutions. Prepared using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sustainability guidelines, we also discuss our performance in key areas that enable continuous improvement, including: employee relations, environmental and supply chain management systems; community investment and economic performance and benefits.
In 2017, we have also developed enhanced disclosure on Indigenous Rights and Relationships in North American Energy Infrastructure.
