Safe Community First Responder Program

Small communities all across Canada and the U.S. rely on fire departments, ambulance services, and other emergency responders to keep them safe. Money is perennially tight, especially in rural municipalities with a small tax base, and equipment that could enhance the capabilities of these first responders is a luxury for some communities.
Recognizing that, in 2002 Enbridge launched its Safe Community First Responder program specifically for first responders providing safety along the company’s rights-of-way. The program awards grants of up to $7,500 for safety equipment, professional training, or safety education programs to organizations invited to apply, including fire departments, emergency medical and rescue services, emergency management organizations, 9-1-1 centers, ambulance services and law enforcement organizations. Applications for the Safe Community First Responder Program are by invitation only.
The safety of the communities near our projects and operations, and the people who live and work along our system, remain our highest priority. That’s why we’re proud to support the organizations that help keep communities safe.
Our Safe Community First Responder program expanded to Canada in 2009, and has invested US$12.5 million (C$15.7 million) in North American emergency responder organizations since its inception—including US$1.7 million (C$2.3 million) in 2019.
Our Safe Community First Responder grant is now by invitation only and requires a fully separate grant application. If you feel you are eligible and would like to apply, please contact us at fuelingfutures@enbridge.com. Recipients can expect a funding decision by May or by November, depending on the date of application.
